History of Monticello, Kansas

Monticello is an area within the Kansas City Metropolitan Area that is known as a former township. While not its own area anymore, Monticello used to be the crossroads for fur trading and a natural choice for the county seat until the Kansas Midland Railroad bypassed Monticello for Olathe in the 1870s. Currently, Monticello is part of Lenexa and Shawnee, Kansas. Probably most famously, Monticello is known for one of their first constables— Wild Bill Hickok.

Hicock left Monticello in 1859, the same year Monticello survived a strong tornado, a grasshopper plague, and a fire. Monticello has a long history of turmoil and troubles, but is left standing today as an important part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area.
