Sitting on the Illinois River with the I&M Canal running through the downtown area, Seneca is a filled with productive agricultural land and has a strong farming economy. During World War 2, the Prairie Shipyard was built by Chicago Bridge and Iron Company in Seneca and Land Ship Tanks were built there. Each year the Shipyard Days Festival is celebrated with 4 days of events including a beer tent, carnival, parade and more to celebrate and remember the rich history and contributions made by Seneca during the war.
