Pekin Cleanup and Restoration

Pekin began in 1824 as a simple log cabin built on a ridge overlooking the beautiful Illinois river, on a site that is now the foot of Broadway Drive.  Within 5 years a community grew around that log cabin, and in 1829 a county surveyor laid out a “town site.” Many of the streets are named after the wives and daughters of early Pekin settlers.

The wife of early settler Major Nathan Cromwell named the city Pekin because she believed it was exactly on the opposite side from Peking in China. 

In the 1840s, Pekin was the site, Abraham Lincoln and several local politicians agreed to support each other to keep from splitting the Whig vote.  This pact became known as the Pekin Agreement in the Lincoln biographies.

Pekin is also known as the home of distinguished Senator Everett Dirkson, a senator in Congress for many years.  He once campaigned to name the marigold flower the national floral emblem.  In 1973 to honor Senator Dirkson, The Marigold Festival was started.  The festival is held in Mineral Springs Park, and continues to be a favorite central Illinois festival to this day.

Pekin is a great family friendly town that sees consistent growth and development.  Located just a few miles from Peoria between Chicago and St Louis, Pekin sees its share of weather as conflicting weather fronts meet across the great plains.  Being located along the Illinois River the area is subject to occasional floods.  Seasonal weather can run to over 90 degrees in the summer to -30 in the winter, contributing to fires in summer and freezing pipes in the winter.  The conflicting weather fronts that meet across the great plains can also bring tornadoes.  SERVPRO® has served Pekin for decades and has grown with the community, ensuring we can handle whatever nature or fate brings.
