Pocahontas is a small city in Pocahontas County with a population of 1,867. The city was named after a Powhatan women from Virginia by the name of Pocahontas. There are other geographical names throughout the city related to the colony at Jamestown where Pocahontas was from including Rolfe, Powhatan Township and Varina. Pocahontas transitioned to a city on May 16, 1892. Pocahontas has a hot-summer with humidity climate and bitter cold winters. In 1900, a railroad was built for transportation. the city also has an airport called the Pocahontas Municipal Airport located one mile outside the city. The airport has two runways, one of concrete and lights the other of turf without lights. Pocahontas was the home to Larry Biittner a former Major League Baseball player. Robert Hansen a famous Serial killer whose parents owned the Pocahontas Home Bakery downtown also grew up in the city.
In the spring of 2011 several tornado's' hit Pocahontas County and surrounding towns. An EF4 tornado touched down on the west side of town, there were no fatalities or injuries when these tornado's occurred. I had a major issue with ground water flooding that filled my egress window well, then broke thru & filled my basement with almost 3 feet of water. We were able to sump pump most of it out. But were left with a mess & lots of mud & broken glass. Serve Pro was amazing & did an outstanding job. They went above & beyond. I’d post pics if I could. Most of the crew had to work hard on this one & they were all so awesome. I highly recommend!
