PEMBROKE’s HISTORY
Pembroke was established in 1889 when Western Railroad was extended. The first resident of the city was M.E. Carter who happened to be a member of the construction crew for the railroad. He became the first section-master for the railroad & thanks to his hard work and dedication around the railroad, Pembroke became the commercial and business center of Bryan County. Pembroke officially became incorporated in 1905. With roughly 2600 residents, Pembroke is small, but rich in history. The downtown area is quaint, but offers just about everything you may need. If you ever find yourself in Pembroke, make sure to check out the Canoochee River and go canoeing or kayaking - the views are incredible.
