Lester Garfield Maddox Sr. (September 30, 1915 – June 25, 2003) was an American politician who served as the 75th governor of the U.S. state of Georgia from 1967 to 1971. He is the man in which the city name was derived from. A populist Democrat, Maddox came to prominence as a staunch segregationist when he refused to serve black customers in his Atlanta restaurant, the Pickrick. Even in this time, it was a violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Despite his infractions and controversial behavior, he later served as Georgia lieutenant governor under Jimmy Carter. This area, being near Americus, has gained huge notoriety in these leaders who have made large marks in Georgia history. Today, one of the main attractions is the Interstate Highway 75 bridge over the Chattahoochee River.
