Drayton is an unincorporated community in Dooly County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. This community was named after William Drayton (1776–1846), an American congressman. Additionally, a post office called Drayton was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1901. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the place in 1869 as the "Town of Drayton, and the town's municipal charter was eventually dissolved in 1995.
This small area upholds the ongoing religious traditions as it once did as far back as the 1800’s. One of the most prominent churches in Drayton is the Drayton Methodist Church. In fact, the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church has noted that when this church was built, Drayton, in Dooly County, was a village of several stores, saloon, post office, and courthouse. In 1840, the present church was built with land deeded in 1848. Mrs. Temlie Brooks recalled that as a nine-year-old in the 1800s, she attended regularly sitting in the balcony. When the church for black members was built across Turkey Creek, the same preacher served both churches for a time. Today, asbestos siding protects the outside, electric lights replace the two kerosene lamps, and the pump organ is silent. Additional denominations have been added, including Baptist Churches, but the Methodist is still most prominent today.
