A group of flamingoes is a “flamboyance.” 

Flamingos usually stand on one leg with the other one tucked beneath the body. The reason for this behavior is not fully understood. Observers initially posited that the birds stood on one leg to conserve body heat while standing in cold water. More careful observation refuted this guess. Flamingoes stand on one leg while in warm waters and – crucially – on land. Since flamingoes show less body sway in a one-legged posture than when standing on one leg, the stance is likely to be related to stability. 

Flamingoes are capable of flight, and therefore need their wings clipped to prevent escape from zoos.  

Flamingoes hatch with grayish-red plumage, but adults range from light pink to bright red due to aqueous bacteria and beta-carotene obtained from their food supply. A well-fed, healthy flamingo is more vibrantly colored, thus a more desirable mate; a white or pale flamingo, however, is usually unhealthy or malnourished. Captive flamingos are a notable exception; they may turn a pale pink if they are not fed carotene at levels comparable to the wild.
