History of Orange City

Orange City, Florida was first settled by the Cocoa Indians who became farmers and hunters. The first settlers in Orange City were later followed by immigrants from Ethiopia, Cuba and Germany and other countries around the world. The town was originally founded in 1887 as a home for workers constructing the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad’s headquarters. This led to an influx of people looking for work, leading to the town being named after the orange groves that surrounded it. In 1891 construction began on an extension to the railroad including a branch line to Daytona Beach, which effectively made Orange City a central hub.
