Mayport is a small fishing village located at the northern point of Intracoastal West of Atlantic Beach, between the St. Johns River and Naval Station Mayport located in consolidated Jacksonville, FL. In 1909 it was incorporated as a city but has been considered both part of the City of Jacksonville, and part of the Jacksonville Beaches communities since 1968. Its only public road is SR A1A, which crosses the St. Johns River by Ferry to Fort George Island in Mayport.
The history of a Ferry crossing in this area dates back to 1874. Today, the St. Johns River Ferry is operated by the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA). When you board the Ferry you are technically entering the Timucuan Preserve, which includes Fort Caroline and Kinsley Plantation, so you may see a Park Ranger on board from time to time. The Timucuan Preserve is one of the last unspoiled coastal wetlands on the Atlantic Coast. The Ferry also helps connect segments of the "East Coast Greenway, a 3000-mile-long system of trails connecting Maine to Florida." In Florida, the trail mainly travels along SR A1A.
Commercial shrimping has been a vital industry in the area for over 150 years. Here Wild Atlantic Shrimp, also known as Mayport Shrimp, is available for purchase at local seafood markets in Mayport, off the boat on either the south or north sides of the St. Johns River, and is also served at local fish camp restaurants.
The Mayport community is mostly known for Naval Station Mayport, a Naval Airstation/ Navy Base that "can accommodate aircraft carrier-size vessels, ship's intermediate maintenance activity (SIMA), and a military airfield."
