Gifford is an unincorporated community just north of Vero Beach. The area has significant ties to Indian River County’s history, housing the first black high school that later became Gifford Middle School after desegregation in 1969. Gifford has grown since its conception in the mid-1880s and was originally called Brownsville after a local farmer. Gifford was later renamed after Charlie Gifford who was the railroad’s stationmaster at the time. Taking a stop at the Gifford Historical Museum and Cultural Center gives visitors a glimpse into the past and the foundations of the area. Like most of Indian River County, Gifford was a part of the citrus industry, but it also was tied to the railway system. Many of the community’s inhabitants moved to the area to work on Flagler’s railroad and the area grew.
