The history of Fort Myers Shores, Florida begins with the Calusa Indians. They were believed to have settled near the area around 5,000 years ago. The Spanish eventually arrived in the region and established a fort called Nombre de Dios. The town of Fort Myers Shores was founded in the early 1900s, and was originally known as “Hendry Hill.” As the town grew and prospered, it became known as “The Heart of Fort Myers Shores.” In 1919, Hendry Hill changed its name to Fort Myers Shores and began its rise into a thriving residential community.
