History of DeLand, Florida
Originally inaccessible except by steamboat up the St. Johns River, DeLand was uninhabited until 1874. When its first settler arrived, it was only a few years until the land became a town.
In 1876, Henry Addison DeLand of New York visited the area then known as Persimmon Hollow and had huge dreams for the citrus-filled area. He brought in people from New York to clear the land, build streets, and houses, and form a town.
By 1877, the town had its first public school, and by 1883, DeLand was home to Florida's first private college, later to be known as John B. Stetson University. DeLand was also the first Florida city to have electricity and serves as the county seat for Volusia County.
