History of Davenport
It is believed that the first residents of Davenport, Florida settled in the Southeast portion of the state. The area was explored by Europeans beginning in the 16th century, with Spain and France vying for power over much of the region during this time period. In 1763, when Great Britain solidified control over Florida from Spain with the Treaty of Paris, settlements began to arise along navigable waterways linking with more established regions further north. One such settlement was founded on an outcropping along one such river in 1818.
