History of Naples

John Stuart Williams, a Confederate general and Kentucky US Senator, and his partner Walter N. Haldeman—a Louisville businessman—founded Naples in 1886.

Newspaper reports describing the town's mild weather and abundant fish resulted in its official naming by promoters. The stories called it "surpassing Naples, Italy." In 1927, the Seaboard Air Line Railroad was extended to Naples. The following year, 1928, the Tamiami Trail linked Naples to Miami. In 1941—during WWII—the US Army built an airfield in Naples for training purposes and it is now known as "Naples Municipal Airport".
