On the western side of the Mianus River's mouth is Cos Cob. Cos Cob Harbor, a protected location on the northern shore of Long Island Sound, is where the village is located. The area was settled in the 1800s, and was a producer of agriculture in the area.  With the construction of the railroad and the damming of the Mianus River, Cos Cob's function as a commercial shipping port that supplied potatoes and apples to New York City was eliminated.
