Ohio City, Colorado, was founded in 1879. However, the Silver Panic of 1893 led to near abandonment. The early 1900s brought a resurgence in mining activities, reviving Ohio City with a population of about 250 residents, a newspaper, a theater, and even a brass band and orchestra. The construction of a new town hall in 1906, which still stands, symbolized this period of revitalization.
The Gold Link mine was the driving force behind this resurgence. A large concentrating mill was constructed at the mine's property, signaling renewed activity and optimism. The Montrose Press reported in January 1908 that this part of Gunnison County was becoming one of the most active mining sections on the western slope. Despite the ups and downs, Ohio City maintained a post office from 1880 until 1972. Today, it stands as a semi-ghost town with a few original buildings and some current residents, attracting tourists during the summer months who enjoy the area's recreational opportunities and 4x4 roads
