Salton City is an interesting city and is synonymous with the Salton Sea. The community was planned and developed to be a resort destination with an extensive road, water, sewer, and power grid capable of supporting 40,000 residents on 12,000 residential lots. Salton City fell drastically short of the planners' expectations. Today, the population is only 5,500.

Salton City was established in 1958 by an out-of-state oil refiner and land developer. The town was planned to be along the shoreline of the Salton Sea, a saline, endorheic rift lake located directly on the San Andreas Fault.

As climate change has impacted the Salton Sea, in the 1970s, most buildings along the shoreline, including the marina, were abandoned due to rising sea elevation. In the 1980s, the Imperial Irrigation District took proactive water conservation measures to reduce the flow of unused canal water into the Salton Sea. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, as salinity and suspected pollution levels increased, the population decreased to 2,000 residents, and the area resembled a ghost town.

Even with the problems of the Salton Sea, the sea remains the best habitat for 400 species of migrating birds and 65 species of waterbirds, including federally endangered species. As nearby other nearby lakes dry up, the birds have nowhere to go. Great efforts are underway to restore the shoreline marshes for the birds.

Recently, development in Salton City has increased, caused by the escalating housing market elsewhere. Cheap local land and housing costs, highway improvements, and a casino have attracted new residents. Today, the population is 5,500.
