History of North San Jose
History tells us that the first settlers discovered North San Jose, California during the gold rush of 1849. The town came into existence in 1852 when the first settlers built their homes near the springs of Coyote Creek. The community was named Tevis Rancho and soon boasted a fully operational flour mill and post office. When San Jose incorporated as a city in 1887, Tevis Rancho was included as part of its boundaries. The location of North San Jose was a natural choice for settlers that had to travel up and over the Santa Cruz Mountains.
