In the early 1850”s Portuguese immigrants began to settle here, they raised chickens, cattle, and hogs. They grew wheat and barley and dabbled with dairy. The levees were built and maintained by the Portuguese and then used to transport people by ferry for free and for .25 cents, after the levee break in 1904. The Sacramento Brick Company originated here, it was known for its bricks being dug out from the “clay Pits” at what is known currently as Lake Greenhaven. The bricks have been used in local areas of interest, portions of The State Capitol, various structures in Old Sacramento, the Elks Club, and the Memorial Auditorium.
