Like many of the towns in the Imperial Valley, Heber was founded in 1903 by the Imperial Land Company to support agricultural and railroad activities in a rapidly developing part of the country at the beginning of the twentieth century. The community of Heber originated with the construction of the Imperial Valley branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad during the early 1900s. The Imperial Land Company, working under the direction of the California Development Company, elected to honor company President A.H. Heber by naming the community after him in 1903. The anticipated construction of the San Diego Yuma Railroad, which was expected to pass through Heber, spurred local development for the next five years.

However, in 1908, Heber's rapid growth slowed considerably as the nearby community at El Centro gained importance as a regional center. Heber's continued existence is based on the importance of agriculture and its reliance on irrigation. Today, Heber is designated as a census-designated place (CDP) with more than 800 homes. Heber is close to our SERVPRO offices and is unique in that it is 45 feet above sea level in an area where other towns are often below sea level. The population was 4,275 at the last census.
