A Spanish word for “little oaks”, Encinitas was initially inhabited by the native Kumeyaay until former governor of Baja California, Gaspar de Portolá, went on an expedition in 1769, where he discovered the beautiful seaside landscape. However, it wasn’t until just 37 years ago that the city of Encinitas was officially incorporated.
