Del Paso Heights is defined as the city north of the American River. The recognizable borders are Interstate 80 on the north, Norwood Avenue on the west, Arcade Creek on the south, and Roseville Road on the east. Del Paso Heights was originally part of Rancho Del Paso Mexican land grant to Eliab Grimes in 1844. James Ben Ali Haggin acquired the land in 1862 and converted the property into a thoroughbred horse breeding farm. Then in 1886 Ben Ali was California's first Kentucky Derby winner.

A well-known landmark of Del Paso Heights is the Grant Union High School. Built in 1935 with the headlining feature being a pool that would be open to the public during non-school hours. This became an important amenity to the surrounding community. In fact, in 2018 the school announced that they would be closing the pool for the summer because of vandalism and there was such a large uproar from the community that they had to revoke their decision to close.
