Did you know that the first people to inhabit this area were the Kumeyaay Native Americans? It wasn’t until 1769 that Spain started erecting their Spanish Missions, occupying the Pacific Coast. Later on, the Spanish began referring to the indigenous people as the Diegueño. About a hundred years later, an Irish immigrant by the name of Frank Cullen bought the land in the late 1800’s. His wife was Welsch-born so, to honor her, he dubbed the small beachside community after the capital of Wales: Cardiff. Technically a sub-city of Encinitas, this tight-knit community has since become a great place to raise children and is an equally great destination for surfers. There’s even a statue called the “Cardiff Kook” stationed on the west side of Highway 101, at the entrances to the San Elijo State Beach campground. The statue was originally titled “Magic Carpet Ride” by creator Matthew Antichevich, but the statue quickly earned its nickname due to the surfer in the statue’s unorthodox surfing form. Surfers from far and wide come to spots like Swami’s and Cardiff Reef to catch a few waves and good times.
