Calwa, California is a tiny neighborhood, only about 370 acres (.58 sq mi) and a population of 2,486. The name “Calwa” is an acronym that came from the “California Wine Association.” In 1885, the land was civilized by Hugh William La Rue for his vision of orchards and vineyards. Unfortunately, his first crops were ruined by a grasshopper infestation so he decided to cultivate elsewhere. Since then, Calwa became a railroad town when Santa Fe Railway built a rail yard and houses for their employees. The “Calwa City” post office opened in 1913 and it still stands. Today, the area is mainly residential with a few business buildings on the north and south outer ends. Calwa Recreation and Park District is the largest park in the Calwa boundary. This park has many amenities such as an art wall, food court/food truck, eating areas, playground, and sports areas. Since 1955, this park has been a center for the people of Calwa to come together, celebrate, and bond.
