History of Marana
Marana is a town in Pima County, Arizona. The town of Marana was created in 1977, as a result of the merger between Marana, Saddlebrooke and Tortolita CDPs. The history of Marana, Arizona is a storied one that begins with a fort and a battle. Many of its first settlers came to the area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The town grew from the nearby farm and ranch land in the early twentieth century. It also grew because the military built weapons testing facilities during World War II in the area. Eventually, the community came to be known as “the city of sun, sweat, and progress.”
