The population was 15,765 at the 2000 census and 23,820 as of the 2020 census. It named for a rock fountain. The city's history can be traced back to early Native American inhabitants, Spanish Settlers, and Anglo-American homesteaders. The story of Fountain Hills begins back in 1868, when Jacob Walz erected a stagecoach stop on the flanks of what is now called "Twin Buttes," just east of present day Fountain Hills. Many years later, in 1990, two developers decided to join forces and create their own version of paradise by building a small city along the south-facing slopes of Four Peaks. these developers researched their surroundings and determined that there was enough land for new home construction along with commercial development.
