Van Buren is the county seat of Crawford County, Arkansas. Located northeast of Fort Smith at the junction of Interstate 40 and Interstate 540. Van Buren was incorporated in 1845. According to the 2010 census, Van Buren has a population of 22,791 people. Van Buren is Arkansas’ 22nd largest city, behind Searcy.
In 1818 the area known today as Van Buren was settled by David Boyd and Thomas Martin. Shortly after Arkansas became a state in 1819, Daniel and Thomas Phillips built a lumber yard to service the steamboat traffic along the Arkansas River. During this period, the community was known as Phillips Landing. The first post office was constructed in 1831 and named after the Secretary of State Martin Van Buren, which is where the current name comes from.
During the Civil War, Van Buren was the site for a clash between the Union and Confederate armies. The Union forces were led by Major General Samuel R. Curtis. The Confederate forces were led by Major General T.C. Hindman. The Union won this battle with minimal casualties. The result drove the Confederates across the Arkansas River into Fort Smith. With many historical homes, fire damage restoration services are essential to this city.
After the 1940s flood, many levies were constructed to hold back the Arkansas River when it would rise above flood stage. In the spring of 2019, the Arkansas River was expected to crest 21 feet above the flood stage, which is currently 22 feet. The only levy to fail was along Highway 59 south. This flood damaged or destroyed many low-lying areas. The need for water damage restoration continues to be important to the residents of Van Buren.
