St. Florian is a town in Lauderdale County, Alabama. It is part of the Florence-Muscle Shoals Metropolitan Statistical Area known as “The Shoals”. St. Florian has a radius of about one and one-half miles. It is approximately twelve miles south of the Tennessee line, and six miles north of Florence. The area was first called Wilson Stand, for John and Matthew Wilson, the original owners of the town site. The present community was founded in the 1870s by a colony of Germans who named the town after Florian Rasch who donated the first bell to be placed in the church. A post office was established at St. Florian in 1879 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1904. The town incorporated at some point in the 1970’s. One of the area landmarks is St. Michael Catholic Church. The walls, roof and tower of the present sanctuary were completed in 1918. The beautiful windows, with their ecclesiastic art, were manufactured in Munich, Bavaria, during the 1920s. Things of interest near by include Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, McFarland Park, The University of North Alabama, and Wilson Dam Waterfall.
