The city of Somerville is located in the northern part of the state of Alabama in Morgan County. It is included in the Decatur Metropolitan Area and the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. The 2020 United States Census reported a population of 796 people living in the city. During the bulk of the ninetieth century, Somerville was the county seat of Morgan County until it was moved to Decatur in 1891. It got its name from an officer killed during the Creek War of 1814 whose name was Robert M. Summerville.

Somerville is home to The Morrow Cemetery and the Old Cotaco White House, which are both listed as official Alabama Landmarks and Heritages. The Rice-Green-Pryor House and the Morgan County Courthouse, which is the oldest still intact courthouse in Alabama, are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
