Marion Cleanup and Restoration

This city was formerly Choctaw Indian territory and was first referenced as Muckle Ridge before it was renamed in honor of Fancis Marion, as he was a hero of the American Revolution. The city was established in 1817 and became the seat of Perry County, which is located adjacent to the Talladega National Forest and The Cahaba River with country main road views of Highways 5, 14, and 45. In the 1850's, the town hit a huge growth spirt with various general stores, grocery stores, dry-goods stores, and apothecaries. Since then the city has grown in diversity, creating a beautiful balance of people, land, weather, and its location that fashions together an "old and new" South. This area is rich with history and verified with National Register of Historic Places. One of many antebellum public buildings is the old City Hall built in 1832. Besides admiring the historic buildings around this beautiful area, the Alabama Military Hall of Honor Museum is an attraction that displays portraits and artifacts, which is located in the Marion Military Institute. Another historic museum is Lincoln Normal School Campus and Museum, which houses significant memorabilia from Lincoln School as it was founded in 1867 by freed slaves. Also in the area is Alabama Women's Hall of Fame that honors Alabama's most outstanding women, like Helen Keller, and is located on Judson College campus. For outside activities, Douglas-Moore Memorial Park and The Georgia Walker Memorial Walking Trail are great areas to enjoy peaceful walks and baseball games.
