Jackson, Alabama is a beautiful city located along the banks of the Tombigbee River in Southern Clarke County. The city was founded in 1816 and it gets its name from the 7th President of the United States, Andrew Jackson. Today, Jackson has grown into the largest city in Clarke County with a population of 5,557 residents. The city was formerly known as Pine Level and Republicville. 

The city has a storied past in regards to American war history. During the Civil War, a Confederate fort named Fort Carney was located just south of Jackson along the Tombigbee River at Carney’s Bluff. Today, a cannon from Fort Carney sits outside the Jackson City Hall. During World War II, a prisoner of war camp was located in Jackson on Ocre Avenue. The camp operated from April 6, 1945 to March 12, 1946. The camp held 253 German soldiers who were members of Afrika Korps, a German expeditionary force stationed in Northern Africa.

In the past, the city’s economy was primarily driven by the timber industry. Today, the city has a very diverse economic portfolio. The largest employer in Jackson is Packaging Corporation of America, a paper mill that relies on the lush timber that grows in the Jackson area. 

Jackson is home to four sites on the National Register of Historic Places; the Jackson Historic District, Clarke Mills, Doit W. McClellan Lustron House, and J.P. McKee Lustron House.
