Frisco City Cleanup and Restoration

Situated just 10 miles from the Alabama River is the Town of Frisco City. The town is located in Central Monroe County and has a population of 1,170 people. The town’s beginnings can be traced back to the mid-19th century. The town has gone by several different names throughout its history. Initially, the town was split into two communities, Lufkin and Snider. The town was officially incorporated in 1909 as Jones Mill. The name stemmed from the local grist mill that was operated by Reverend James W. Jones. Just four years later, the name was changed to Roy in honor of Gulf, Florida, Alabama Railroad owner Roy Megargel. Six years later, in 1919, the town reverted back to the previous name of Jones Mill. In 1925, the GFA Railroad was sold to the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad. In 1928, the residents of the town decided to change the name to honor the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad. The town decided on the name Frisco City, playing off of San Francisco. 

Today, several sites remain of the town’s historic past. When you travel through downtown Frisco City, be sure to look for the old red caboose. The caboose is the only remaining artifact from the San Francisco Railroad. The sign on the side of the caboose read, “Ship it on the Frisco!” Another notable attraction is the J.W. Jones House. The two-story Victorian farmhouse was built in 1889 by Reverend and Mrs. J.W. Jones. In 1889, it was known as the “big house” as it was the largest house in town. The house was donated to the Town of Frisco City in 1913. Today, the house sits in the town park along with two other buildings from the Jones Mill era. The other two buildings on site are the old Jones Mill Post Office and the one-room Jones Mill jailhouse.
