The shining light of Southern Escambia County is Flomaton, Alabama. The town borders the State of Florida with just a bridge separating Flomaton and Century, Florida. The town received its name from a combination of the words Florida, Alabama, and town to show the relation with the Florida/Alabama border. The town was settled as a railway junction in 1869 and officially incorporated in 1908. In the early 20th century, the town’s economy was driven by the timber business. Into the 1960s, the town served as a junction for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. The L7N railroad was a main connection for trains traveling to New York City, Atlanta, Cincinnati, and New Orleans. The railroad also ran trains south to the beaches in Pensacola, Florida. Today, the town remains a railway junction for CSX Transportation. The current line runs from Montgomery to the Florida Gulf Coast.
Flomaton is home to two top rated schools in Alabama. Flomaton Elementary serves the children of Flomaton PreK through 6th grade. Flomaton High School serves the children of Flomaton 7th grade through 12th grade. Both schools offer a wide variety of extracurricular activities for students, both academic and athletic. The mascot of the schools is the Hurricanes. The school colors are green and white. The Flomaton High School football team won the 3A state championship in 2018. The other athletic teams such as basketball and baseball have been very competitive in their divisions for many years.
