Designated by the Alabama State Legislature as the Escambia County seat in 1885, Brewton has grown into a thriving town in South Central Escambia County. With a population of 5,276 residents, it was named as one of the 100 best small towns in America in 1995. It was founded in 1861 as a train stop by Edmund Troupe Bruton and the lumber in the area began to be harvested. During that time, the city took on the nickname “the richest little town in the South.” This nickname was given to the town because of its high per capita income and because of several wealthy “lumber barons” that lived in the community. Brewton is home to the T.R. Miller High School Tigers. The football team has won six state championships in its history. The last state championship came in 2002. Brewton is also home to the main campus of Coastal Alabama Community College. The Brewton campus was founded in 1964 as Jefferson Davis Community College.

The City of Brewton is also home to the Alabama Blueberry Festival. The festival has many arts & craft vendors as well as food vendors. The festival is famous for its blueberry desserts including blueberry cobbler, blueberry crunch, and the world famous blueberry ice cream. 

Perhaps one of the most notable and odd landmarks in Brewton is the old Ritz Theater sign located along Highway 31. The sign is what is left of the old Ritz Theater building that was demolished in 1996. The sign, which includes the building facade and marquee, is now used for community announcements.
