  • Smoke from wildfires in Canada is once again having an impact in the the northern region of the United States. Track the progression of wildfire smoke and know when it will reach your home state.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires is now causing concern for northern states such as Minnesota and Wisconsin. Meteorologists in Pennsylvania noted their state could also see the effects of the Canadian wildfires if the conditions are right, according to the Associated Press. The Washington Post said smoke and haze from wildfires in Canada began to impact air quality across the United States in early May. "More than 100 fires were burning in British Columbia and just shy of four dozen in Alberta. Other large blazes were scorching provinces to the east."

In 2023, a thick haze from the Canadian wildfires was detected as far south as Georgia, as far east as New Hampshire, as far west as Montana, and even in Nebraska and Missouri, as late as December of. For a large part of 2023, the northeastern half of the country was bathed by an orange haze from the wildfire smoke. Historical data from NOAA for June 2023 shows particulate matter in the air from wildfire smoke was at such an unhealthy rate it was almost hazardous to breathe the air outdoors.
